Responsible sourcing

The Way We Source

We use the Sustainable Apparel Coalition Higg Index and SEDEX Smeta audits to measure the environmental and social performance of our direct suppliers. These third-party audits alert us to areas of concern and opportunities for change which we work with our factories to improve.

Many of our suppliers also carry additional auditing certifications through external auditors to assess their environmental and social performance.  Our goal is to support our suppliers to continue improving each year, with a firm focus on working hours, living wages, carbon reduction, water efficiency and biodiversity protection.

Code of Conduct and Living Wage

We have set high environmental and social standards to provide confidence in our products throughout their life cycle. All our direct suppliers agree to our Code of Conduct which is based on the International Labour Organization's core standards for safe, fair and healthy working conditions.

Part of our commitment to safe and dignified work is a Global Living Wage analysis using the Anker Methodology. A Living Wage is the wage determined to be sufficient to afford a decent standard of living for the worker and their family, earned in a 48 hour work week.

Modibodi engages Fair Supply to provide advice and assistance throughout key parts of the living wage audit, including:

  1. Cross-checking our approach for consistency with the leading Anker Methodology for living wage audits.
  2. Assisting us to develop an appropriate and practical solution to the calculation of a baseline living wage figure (based on cost-of-living indicators).
  3. Determine if garment workers are being paid a living wage.

Modibodi has a small supply chain with a handful of direct suppliers. We undertook a Living Wage Audit of two Modibodi factories representing approximately 70% of Modibodi’s total production. Both factories are located in the Chinese city of Quanzhou in the Fujian region. Modibodi used data from the factories, aligned to the annual third party auditors reports to analyse wages paid. As no specific Living Wage figure from Fujian is available, a wage from a similar city called Shenzen determined by the Global Living Wage Coalition was used as an appropriate proxy.

The Fair Supply review concluded that the methodology and rate of pay for both Modibodi factories meets the applicable threshold for a living wage (based application of either 2021, 2022, or most recently updated 2023 GLWC figures).

Modibodi staff visit the factories each year to support our factories to build knowledge and continuously improve.
